“I’m Living with Dementia” Awareness Campaign
September 21- 29, 2024

Everywhere!

This is a free event.

Contact: 775) 857-7818 or cacklin@daanow.org

Members of Dementia Action Alliance will be wearing buttons and stickers that boldly proclaim, “I’m Living with Dementia.” Our goal? To wear these badges with pride and spark conversations about dementia in our everyday interactions. Whether it’s a chat with a cashier, a brief conversation with a bus driver, or even a passing exchange on the street, these moments can create a ripple effect of awareness and understanding. By sharing our stories and experiences, we can help reduce the stigma surrounding dementia and educate others on what it truly means to live with dementia. DAA's incredible members, who are experts of lived experience, are the most powerful voices we have to change perceptions and break down barriers to well-being.

Hosted by Dementia Action Alliance

Taking It to the Streets Poetry Collage
Sunday September 22, 2024

1:00 PM

Join Rebecca Wellner and Alice Rydel at MacDonald Park in Forest Hills, Queens. It is located at
Queens Boulevard between Yellowstone Boulevard and 70th Road, New York, U.S.A. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Rebecca at: asweetercourse@gmail.com

Free event, no registration required - we hope you’ll join us.

Come add your thoughts, hopes and vision by contributing to the poetry collage.
Let’s find out what people think about dementia: Do they worry about it? Know anyone who has it?
Avoid the topic altogether? Let’s encourage people to reimagine what dementia is and be a part of
re-shaping the conversation around it. How can we live well with dementia? How can we advocate
for a society that values those living with dementia and embraces them as a part of the community?
How can we, in our daily lives, encourage and promote acts of compassion towards those living with
dementia and their care partners? Last year, we took to the streets in Manhattan to ask community
members to put their thoughts down in writing as we created a poem about Breaking the Stigma of
Dementia. This year, we will ask passers by to write down their thoughts again, but we are going to
be setting those thoughts to music to create a song about dementia! Musician Thomas Schecter
will join us with his guitar to play music while we chat. As the event winds down, he will set the
community's thoughts on dementia to music and will play the completed song.

Rebecca will also livestream portions of this to her social media (@asweetercourse) and will
post a video of the completed song as well in order to encourage others to join in on the conversation. We can't wait to see you there!

Collage of an autumn view -Kernow House

    ***THIS EVENT HAS ENDED***

    Sept 2023

At Kernow House, which is a Barchester home, residents had fun making a collage of an autumn view from a window. An art kit from @Creative Mojow was used and residents enjoyed being creative. Making the collage gave residents an opportunity to reminisce and touching the different textures was a great sensory experience. They selected which colours to use for the autumn window scene and the work is hung in a little lounge, so people can continue to enjoy it.

  • Table Talk: Taking It to the Streets

    ***THIS EVENT HAS NOW ENDED***

    October 6, 2023 - 4pm - 6pm pm Eastern

Let’s find out what people think about dementia: Do they worry about it? Know anyone who has it? Avoid the topic altogether? Let’s encourage people to reimagine what dementia is and be a part of re-shaping the conversation around it. How can we live well with dementia? How can we advocate for a society that values those living with dementia and embraces them as a part of the community? How can we, in our daily lives, encourage and promote acts of compassion towards those living with dementia and their care partners?

We’ll ask people to put their thoughts in writing on large Post-It stickies and help create a Post-It Poster Board Poem about Breaking the Stigma of Dementia!

Rebecca will also livestream portions of this to her social media (@asweetercourse) and will post a picture of the completed poem as well in order to encourage others to join in on the conversation. No registration required - we hope you’ll join us.

Join Rebecca Wellner and Alice Rydel at our table 43rd Street between 9th and 10th Avenues in Manhattan, New York.

  • Taking It to the Streets (Oakland)

    ***THIS EVENT HAS ENDED***
    October 7, 2023 - 11am to 2pm. PDT

We'll introduce ourselves and the Coalition, have a short survey for passersby, our petition to sign, and create new conversations and play with art.

We want to reach the broadest cross-section of individuals and communities so everyone can join us in creating a world, and systems of care, in which a diagnosis of dementia is not the end of life (or a source of stigma, shame and isolation), but a starting point for joy, growth, humanity and new possibilities.

Millions of people are living with and impacted by dementia around the world, yet the code of silence that continues to surround dementia is strong. We hope to have a positive impact at the event with interactions and conversations that creatively share how you and we are reimagining dementia.
